It always feels like when I have the most stories to tell, I find myself silent under their weight. When Mike and I broke up years ago, I just lost all my words for awhile. My thoughts were traveling a million miles a minute, making all the connections, tying the hum of a rusty refrigerator in Missouri to a gauze of silence in Denver. I have those threads sewn up in my heart but the stories take too much work to form. Not too much, but more than I’m ready for each week.
Moving to California has been the same way.

Four years ago, I had just moved into my new apartment in Cornelius, North Carolina, and made my first recipe in my new kitchen: German Chocolate Cheesecake. Today, I’m surrounded by boxes in varying states of unpackedness in my new apartment in San Diego (La Mesa, to be more specific), California, and I just made my first recipe in my new kitchen: Pumpkin Pie Monkey Bread! Most of my apartment is still in disarray, but I’m eager to share with you the ONE room I’ve finished, my bedroom. I’m super proud of how cute it turned out! I always love when people post tours of their newly decorated spaces, so I thought you might like to see mine.

We love our blueberry biscuits here in the South, typically scooped up from a beloved fast-food fried chicken chain. For a quick option, the drive-thru variety works just fine, but graduating to a homemade version is well worth the additional effort – which is not much effort at all.

Today I took my sister shopping for a professional suit for her first interview after graduating college a couple of weeks ago. In the process, I met two Christians. But only one of them showed me Jesus.
Shopping for clothes is never easy, but for someone who doesn’t fit in a male or female box like my sister, it’s exponentially harder in ways that cisgender people like me haven’t imagined. There are very few gender-neutral clothes, and even fewer gender-neutral professional clothes. Belk even has entirely separate stores in our local mall for men and women. My sister, who is nonbinary, and I had already had a difficult conversation about how to balance her gender identity and her marketability in an interview, something most people never have to think about. Should she err on the side of being herself and potentially alienate an employer? Should she err on the side of getting a job and then worry about how to be herself later? There were no easy answers. We decided to go to the women’s store and look for a neutral, professional suit.
